In 1659, the Dutch settlers produced the first wine in South Africa. To say that it was bad, would be an understatement. But soon, they were joined by the French Huguenots, and by 1685, Simon van der Stel's Constantia winegrowing estate was producing reputable whites and reds. Constantia became a favorite of European kings and emperors, from Frederick the Great to Napoleon. Today, the worldwide appreciation for South African wines continues, and the region is recognized for its crisp Sauvignon Blancs, and the signature smoky red Pinotage, a blend of Pinot noir and Cinsaut. In 2004, the Cape Winelands were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in the Cultural category.
